Abernathy Park Master Plan - click to enlarge

When completed, the Abernathy Park will be a welcome addition to the City's public park system and, we hope, a model for connective parks along major traffic arteries in Sandy Springs.

SSC's role is to facilitate neighborhood input on the park's design and construction, working closely with the City of Sandy Springs and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to ensure the goals of the project are met. Negotiations continue for property acquisition and demolition of homes on both sides of the street.

When completed, Abernathy Park will be a welcome addition to the City’s public park system.  The 20+ acre linear park plan, approved by City Council in September 2007,  will be developed in coordination with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT)’s expansion of the Abernathy and Johnson Ferry Road corridors.

SSC and a coalition of neighborhoods are working with the City to bring the master plan to completion.   The Abernathy Park Steering Committee neighborhoods include Brandon Mill Woods, Breakwater, Laurian Woods, Lost Forest, Mt. Vernon Woods, North Harbor, Telfair, Whispering Pines, Woodcliff, and Wyndham Hills.

Funding for the $14 Million project will come from public funds (federal, state, and city), and private donations.  Phase I will begin in Spring 2010, with grading, perimeter fencing and initial landscaping to buffer the surrounding neighborhoods.

Protecting the Abernathy Oak

Oak Tree

The Abernathy Oak Tree

The huge, 66" diameter water oak on Abernathy Road has shaded the neighborhood for more than 75 years. This tree and its smaller sister oak are threatened by the GDOT road expansion project.

We're working with several volunteer groups and the City of Sandy Springs to protect both trees. Professional arborists will seasonally prune, mulch and fertilize the tree throughout the construction period. We've have put up a chain link fence around the trees to guard against to construction activity. We'll provide periodic updates through our newsletter and on this page.

We're giving the trees a fighting chance to survive and to provide welcome shade along the Greenway for years to come.
